TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Senior Philipp Matlari earned a third-place finish, while the West Virginia golf team tied for seventh Sunday at the Seminole Intercollegiate, hosted by Florida State.
Matlari posted four birdies and just one bogey in the final round of play to finish with a three-under 69 on the par-72, 6,695-yard Golden Eagle Country Club Course. The Liemen, Germany, native finished in third place on the individual leaderboard with a final score of 213 (-3) to give WVU a top-five finish at two consecutive events. Additionally, Matlari’s third-place finish is his top individual placement of the season.
“Philipp was outstanding for us this week,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “His game has really improved, and he is playing with a lot of confidence, which is fun to watch. For whatever reason, we just didn’t play our best as a team this weekend. I have to do a better job preparing our guys and getting them ready to go. Luckily, we have a few weeks off at home, then we’ll travel to South Carolina for spring break practice.”
