BECKLEY — The University boys’ basketball team opened the Big Atlantic Classic by doubling up Greenbrier East, 88-44, on Friday.
The No. 1 Hawks used 30 points in the third quarter to pull away from the Spartans after coach Joe Schmidle said his team needed a bit of a wake-up call at halftime. Total, UHS outscored Greenbrier East 45-14 in the second half.
KJ McClurg led all scorers with 29 points, while Kaden Metheny and Ryan Niceler each scored 13 for the Hawks.
UHS (12-3) advanced to take on Woodrow Wilson at 9 p.m. Saturday for the Big Atlantic Classic tournament boys’ championship.
