Concert benefiting School Stores of Preston a success

ARTHURDALE — A Saturday evening jazz and Appalachian concert held to raise money and clothing for School Stores of Preston County was a success, according to Marissa Davis.

Davis, a member of the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area (AFNHA) of AmeriCorps, said the concert raised $837 in cash and collected 245 donated items.

AFNHA co-sponsored the concert along with Food for Preston (FFP) and Arthurdale Heritage.

School Stores of Preston County is a volunteer-run program in partnership with Food for Preston and Preston County Schools.

The program provides students in grades K-12 with basic needs such as food, hygiene items, clothes and school supplies.

Tammy Laney, coordinator of Food for Preston, said the AFNHA AmeriCorps members put on an outstanding fundraising concert.

“The entertainment was amazing,” she said. “There was standing room only.”

Entertainment for the event was provided by the High Street Jazz Band and the Appalachian Sound Syndicate. Pies and Pints provided food. Beer was provided by Chestnut Brew Works of Morgantown and High Ground Brewing from Terra Alta.

“I am thankful for all the local support so Food for Preston can continue to fight hunger in Preston County by serving people in need through food pantries, the backpack program and school stores program,” Laney said.

Donations of food and funding to Food for Preston are accepted year-round by mail at Food for Preston, P.O. Box 1175, Kingwood, WV 26537; phone at 304-379-3519; or email at coordinator@foodforpreston.org.
