Sabraton Save-a-Lot closing at end of the month

The Save-a-Lot grocery store on Earl L. Core Road in Sabraton will close at the end of the month.

The grocery store is almost directly across the street from the site of the new Aldi, where the Freedom Ford vehicle dealership used to be. That site has been cleared and the new Sabraton Aldi could open sometime this year. Aldi currently has two stores in the Morgantown area — one at 245 Don Knotts Blvd., and one at 3521 Monongahela Blvd., in Star City.

It’s not known if the closure of the Save-a-Lot is related to the new Aldi store.
Large red, white and blue banners announcing the store’s closure at the end of January and 25% off on all items were in the two front windows this week. Inside the store Friday, many of the shelves were barren and there was little to no produce or meats available.

The Sabraton store is owned by Jamieson Family Markets of Uniontown, Pa., which has 30 locations — mostly discount grocery stores — in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Privately held Jamieson Family Markets stores operate under the names Save-a-Lot, Price Cutter, Everyday’s a Party and the Beer/Tobacco Warehouse, including the Price Cutter in Cheat Lake.

A Sabraton Save-a-Lot employee told The Dominion Post Friday that 13 people work at the location. He also said all 13 are expected to keep their jobs as they will be transferred to other nearby stores owned by Jamieson Family Markets.

Telephone calls to Jamieson Family Markets headquarters in Uniontown were not returned Friday.

According to its website, Aldi has more than 1,900 stores in 36 states.
