Allen Copen Sr.

Allen Eugene “Gene” Copen, Sr. of Kingwood passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2020, at Pine Ridge Nursing Home, in Kingwood.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Ann (Davis) Copen, his parents, Clarence A. Copen and Mabel (Braham) Copen, two sisters, Nancy J. Copen and Janice F. “Fay” (Copen) Bishop, and a grandson, Patrick A. Copen.

He is survived by his son, Allen Eugene Copen, Jr. and wife, Vicki L. Copen, of Williamstown, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Melissa “Missy” Copen of Morgantown, Scott Copen of Bruceton Mills, and Jessica Copen of Williamstown; five great-grandchildren, Gary Clements, Jr., Adriana Copen, of Morgantown, and Trent, Wyatt and Levi Copen, of Bruceton Mills; his brother, Glenn Copen, Sr., and his sister Christine Copen, both, of Kingwood. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gene was an avid outdoorsman; he loved to hunt, fish, and camp during his younger years. His love of the outdoors was graciously passed on to his son and grandchildren. He shared countless memorable experiences with his family and friends in the outdoors. He was a great storyteller and loved to share about his many adventures.

Gene served the Preston County community in numerous capacities during his lifetime. He was one of the founders of the KAMP ambulance service, in Kingwood, in 1972, and continued to serve for several years. Gene served as the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 81, in Kingwood, for many years and was an active member of the Kingwood chapter of the Kiwanis Club. He was also a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church, in Kingwood. Gene worked for Browning Funeral Home in Kingwood for 46 years before retiring in 1993. Later, he moved to Cuzzart, W.Va., where he lived until entering Pine Ridge. As his final act of community service, Gene elected to donate his body to the Human Gift Registry.

A memorial service will be held at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Kingwood at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, with the Reverend Michael Argabrite officiating.
