MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — One thing is for certain, Univeristy coach Joe Schmidle is not happy with how his team performed Saturday against Myrtle Beach High in the Hawks’ 79-73 loss.
“We played terrible,” Schmidle said. “You’ve got to have heart to rebound, play defense and love each other, and we didn’t have any heart.”
It’s the first time in four years that UHS has lost back to back games.
After one of his team’s best all-around performances of the season Friday against Millennium (Ariz.), Schmidle was happy with how the Hawks melded. But according to the long-standing coach, something changed within 24 hours of that game. And he isn’t sure exactly what it is.
“I’m not sure. That’s what I’m trying to figure out,” he said. “We’re not playing well together as a unit.
“[We’re going to teach] them how to be tough and play team basketball.”
The Hawks (5-2) held a one-point lead at the half, and opened the second half going up seven on Myrtle Beach. But quickly things began to turn around, and they fell apart as the Seahawks stormed back for a 10-0 run.
The Hawks cut the deficit to one with 1 minute to go but couldn’t get any momentum in the final seconds, even with Kaden Metheny and K.J. McClurg’s combined 50 points.
Metheny’s 29 points paced the Hawks, while McClurg’s 21 made him the only other Hawk in double digits.
Ayden Hickman led the Seahawks with 26 points, while Emore Knox added 20.
UHS returns to action on Monday with a 10:15 a.m. showdown with Morgan Park (Chicago, Ill.).
“These are 16 of the best teams in country. There’s no gimmie games down here,” Schmidle said.
