PSD 1 tells Preston Commission it hopes to have dam completed by June

KINGWOOD — PSD 1 is “looking to June” for a completion of its dam project, according to Danny Layton, water operator for the district.

Layton told commissioners the PSD is going ahead with emergency water. He said board members met with Kingwood about permanent hookups but hookups would be expensive.

Earlier, Tthe Dominion Post reported that Kingwood Water Board Chairman Robert Deriggi said Kingwood would sell water but the price for the water and other details had to be worked out.

“At this point we are looking at temporary connections,” Layton said. “Unless someone has $300,000 they would like to give us for Christmas.”

Layton said all but two areas, Birdscreek and Gladesville, have been flushed. He said they would be flushed Thursday or Friday, weather permitting.

Layton said anyone having problems with their water should call PSD 1. He said the water is safe for consumption.

In other business, Sheriff Dan Loughrie told commissioners he would like to purchase “a good, used vehicle.”

He said money for the vehicle would come from an insurance payment for one of his SUV’s that was totaled.

The vehicle was in an accident Dec. 5, while Deputy R. Martin Jr. was assisting State Police in the pursuit of another vehicle.

The SUV hit ice and gravel at the intersection of Hudson and Sugar Valley Road, slid, went over an embankment and hit a tree.

Loughrie said the Sheriff’s Department now has only two spare vehicles, and an additional vehicle is needed due to the miles deputies travel around the county answering calls.

”We average three domestics a day and have two deputies per shift,” he said. “They are all over the county.”

Loughrie said the SUV was insured for $14,275 and totaled at $14,100. He said the insurance company would pay $13,275, after the deductible.

Loughrie said there could be additional insurance money coming from the accident, but he was not sure how much.

Commissioners voted to reimburse all insurance monies received from the accident, to be used by the sheriff to replace the SUV.

The next meeting of the Preston County Commission will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
