During the last 154 years, The Salvation Army built a legacy of being a steadfast, relied-upon source for community support during times of hardship and economic downturn.
From ensuring community members have food on the table and heat in the winter to making sure every child has a present under the tree at Christmas, The Salvation Army works relentlessly to meet every need in the community.
Lt. Sheldon Greenland, Morgantown’s Corps commanding officer, realizes it is only because of community support that The Salvation Army has been able to keep its doors open.
“The people of Monongalia County are an amazing base of support,” Greenland said. “Our future rests in the hands of the community members, and it is my hope that this Christmas season will get people thinking about the mark they will be leaving on this world and this community.”
The Christmas season is a celebration of the birth of a man who left an undeniable mark on the world. In this spirit, The Salvation Army hopes all community members will reflect on what kind of impact they want to have right here in Monongalia County.
To help get people talking, The Salvation Army offers a variety of free services to anyone with questions or an interest in planning for their future and their own legacy.
“The Planned Giving department really does offer much more than just giving services,” Greenland said. “We can sit down with folks who have concerns about how they can provide for themselves, their families and their community to offer solutions that will alleviate any concern about future financial needs.”
All services of the Planned Giving department are offered to the public free of charge.
As Greenland put it, “In the end, after all, we are not remembered for what we accomplished in our corner office. We are remembered for the impact we had on the lives of others. Our financial investments are always risky, but the investments we make in human lives will live on forever. That is a legacy I would want my name on.”
