MPD charges WVU student with breaking and entering

A WVU student was arrested after police said they found him inside The Book Exchange early Sunday morning.

The Morgantown Police Department charged German Alexander Mejia, of Ashland, Mass., with breaking and entering. The 19-year-old is also charged with felony destruction of property for allegedly breaking a window at the store.

Mejia is a sophomore marketing major, according to WVU spokesperson John Bolt.

Officers were called to The Book Exchange just after 4:15 a.m. to the reported breaking and entering and found the display window closest to Chestnut Street shattered, according to a criminal complaint.

Officers entered the business, found Mejia inside and detained him, the complaint said. Two lanyards that belonged to The Book Exchange were found on Mejia. The officers searched the building after detaining Mejia, but didn’t find anyone else.

Mejia was bleeding from his left hand and was taken to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital to receive treatment, the complaint said.

Mejia was arraigned in Monongalia County Magistrate Court and is free on $10,000 bond.

A manager at The Book Exchange said the owners did not want to discuss the break-in.
