Preston makes Class AAA top 16 in Week 9 WVSSAC playoff ratings with two games remaining

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — With the unveiling of the Week 9 WVSSAC football playoff ratings, Preston finds itself in the top 16, which would put the Knights in the Class AAA playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Preston is tied at No. 15 with John Marshall, which means the Knights and Monarchs share the final two spots with a 5.13 rating. The rating is calculated by how many points and bonus points a team has, divided by how many games it’s played. Through nine weeks, Preston (3-5) has 36 points for beating three AAA schools, which nets them 12 points each.

PHS also has five bonus points, which are gained by how many wins opponents PHS defeated have. The Knights beat University (3-6) last Friday, so that gets them three bonus points. Washington, which Preston beat Oct. 18, has two wins, so that’s an additional two bonus points.

With two winnable games remaining against Buckhannon-Upshur (1-7) and Brooke (2-6), the Knights are in good position to make the postseason. As it stands, they would travel to No. 2 Cabell Midland (9-0) in the first round.

UHS sits at No. 19 and would need a ton of help, along with a win over Morgantown in the Mohawk Bowl, to back it. The Mohigans (2-7) are No. 20 and are in a similar position.

Class A

Clay-Battelle took a big blow with its loss to Conotton Valley last Friday. The Cee-Bees (4-4) sit at No. 20 in the latest ratings with 24 points and 11 bonus points and will host Massanutten (Va.) this Friday.

Trinity (2-6) comes in at No. 35 and will travel to East Hardy on Friday.
