MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia coach Neal Brown announced Tuesday that junior wide receiver Tevin Bush, who has dealt with a foot injury most of this season, will enter the transfer portal to be “closer to home.”
The New Orleans native has only played in two games this season — catching six passes for 95 yards and a touchdown — so it reserves his redshirt season so this year will not count against his eligibility.
“Tevin and I met earlier [Monday] — he’s had a rough few months,” Brown said. “Tevin is a good kid and he’s been dealing with some lingering foot and heel issues. He’s made the decision to enter the transfer portal at this time and I support that decision. He wants to be closer to home, that’s it, and we’ll help him achieve that goal.”
Brown also announced that bandit linebacker VanDarius Cowan is out for the season after suffering a knee injury last Saturday against Iowa State. Cowan was suspended the first four games this season due to an NCAA mandate after transferring to WVU from Alabama.
After just two games, Cowan is sidelined again. Quondarius Qualls got most of the snaps there while Cowan was suspended, but Brown said he will likely have to move players around to get reps at bandit.
“We were making a lot of mistakes there,” Koenning said. “We were trying to run some things that we didn’t run right and we’ve gotta get that corrected. We’ll move and shuffle some guys around. We won’t be as good as we really want, but you never know — maybe somebody will come to the forefront and be a good player there.”
Cornerback Keith Washington, who missed the Iowa State game with a muscle injury, is still questionable heading into Saturday’s game at Oklahoma. If he cannot go, Brown said it’s like Tae Mayo will get the starting nod, with Nicktroy Fortune replacing Hakeem Bailey, who has to miss the first half after being ejected for targeting in the second half against Iowa State.
“If Keith can’t go, then Mayo will be up,” Brown said. “He’ll be playing a lot — we’d still like to redshirt him, if we can. If we can’t, then. … There won’t be any in between — if we play him, there won’t be any in between. If we play him, then we’ll play him in those four games and that’ll be it.”
