KINGWOOD — A Solid Waste Management Board Grant request was not approved for this year, according to Don Smith.
Smith represents the Preston County Commission on the board.
Money from the grant was going to be used to add a recycling center near Terra Alta.
“There was no problem with what we were doing,” Smith said. “It was the location. It was too close to Terra Alta.”
He said Terra Alta currently has a recycling center.
Board members discussed information about a GP-05L System used to recycle glass. Smith said the system is 35 feet long and has to be housed indoors.
“We’d have to partner with one of the municipalities to house it,” he said.
According to information about the system, it separates glass products from non-glass debris. Smith said this would eliminate the need to separate glass by color. He said the system would turn the recycled glass into glass mulch, which could be used in parks and be sold.
In other business, Smith suggested moving next year’s e-recycling event to August, so it is not as close to the Buckwheat Festival as it was this year.
Litter Control Officer Jay Sowers said trucks are not securing loads of trash they are hauling to the landfill. He said he gets calls about bags of trash and other items blowing off the trucks.
Sowers said he received a call about a couch laying near the road.
“I got there and gathered it up. I know who it belongs to,” he said.
