Mark Douglas Smith

Mark Douglas Smith, 62, passed away on Oct. 1, 2019, in Morgantown, after a battle with diabetes and heart disease.
Mark was born April 15, 1957, in Parkersburg, to Jennings Terrell Smith and Patricia Lou Farren Heldreth.
Mark graduated from St. Mary’s and spent his entire life in the Mountain State. He worked as an operating engineer, a purchasing manager at Benson Trucking Bodies and eventually went on to own and operate Lightning Xpress, an expedited shipping business for over 20 years.
A dedicated father, he supported his children in all their pursuits including baseball, basketball, football and RedWings at PHS as well as academics at West Virginia University. He also served as the president of the Worthington Little League and Parkersburg Big Reds Football Boosters.
A devout sports fan, Mark thoroughly enjoyed watching the Parkersburg Big Reds, West Virginia Mountaineers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. Outgoing and gregarious, Mark was quick to befriend nearly all people he met and would routinely brighten the day of anyone he ran into.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia; his father, Jennings; his stepfather, Jake; and his dog, Max.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kellyn and Nick; his son, Kyle; his sister, Deborah; his aunt, Marcia; and his cousin, Sheila.
Viewings will be held at Leavitt Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Thursday and from 11:30-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4. A funeral service will immediately follow the Friday viewing at 1 p.m.
