City moving stop signs off Laurel Street, onto Elmhurst Street, Parkview Drive

Beginning Oct. 7, the city of Morgantown will implement changes to the traffic pattern at the intersection of Laurel and Elmhurst streets and Parkview Drive, in Suncrest.

Stop signs will be removed from Laurel Street and a two-way stop created on Parkview and Elmhurst.

According to a press release issued by the city, studies indicate Laurel Street carries the most traffic through the intersection.

Morgantown City Council approved the changes during its June 18 regular meeting, at the recommendation of the Morgantown Traffic Commission.

The issue was initially raised by residents during a Suncrest Neighborhood Association meeting.

According to the city’s engineering office, the reconfiguration will discourage the use of Elmhurst and Rotary streets as a bypass for Laurel.

Signs will be posted for six months warning drivers of the new traffic pattern and the city’s engineering department will follow up with a study to determine the effectiveness of the change.
