MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Holton Summers fell in love with basketball when he began attending WVU games.
“I first got into basketball by always going to the WVU games,” he said. “I have literally been going since I was a couple weeks old.”
A Morgantown native, Summers is a 2017 graduate of University High.
He is currently a sophomore at Alderson Broaddus University.
Before attending Alderson Broaddus, Summers spent a year honing his basketball skills at Believe Prep Academy in Athens, Tenn.
“Attending Believe Prep was definitely an eye opener,” he said. “There were 70 other kids attending and I was not in West Virginia anymore. The competition was completely different even on a daily basis. A couple of my friends from believe prep are now starting at high major Division-I schools.”
Summers said Athens, Tennessee is not very big.
“Athens is a small town about 45 minutes from Chattanooga and Knoxville,” he said. “It’s a small town that does not have much to offer other than what I was there to do and that was to play basketball.”
Summers is happy with how his freshman season went.
“I feel that my freshman season at AB went really well,” he said. “I did not get to play as much as I would have liked to, but I improved my game and got used to playing at the collegiate level.”
He is excited about this upcoming season.
“I am look forward to this season because we just got a new coach and I am anxious has to how this season will play out.”
There were several reasons Summers chose to attend Alderson Broaddus.
“I chose AB because it was close to home,” he said. “They are the number 1 ranked academic school in West Virginia, and the campus just has a home feeling about it.”
“What I like most about AB is that everything is laid back.”
Summers says Philippi and Morgantown are completely different.
“Philippi is nothing like Morgantown,” he said. “Philippi has five restaurants in the whole town and in Morgantown, you can have that on one street.”
Summers is majoring in business administration.
“My plans following graduation are to attend law school at WVU.”
In his spare time when not playing basketball, Summers enjoys hunting and fishing.
