Morgantown Police investigate crash into Cobun Creek

MORGANTOWN – A 19-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after crashing into Cobun Creek on Tuesday, according to the Morgantown Police Department.

Officers found the motor vehicle crash that had just occurred near the Cobun Creek Bridge on South University Avenue just before 3 p.m., according to Chief Ed Preston.

Shannon Brown, of Jacksonburg, was driving southbound when she crossed over two northbound lanes of traffic, entered a wooded area next to the road and kept traveling north before crashing into Cobun Creek, Preston said.

Brown was able to get out of the 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sport, was alert and talked to officers at the scene of the crash. She was taken to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital for evaluation, Preston said.

No other vehicles or people were involved and the cause of the crash is still under investigation, Preston said.

As a precautionary measure, the Morgantown Fire Department placed two booms at the mouth of the creek and the Monongahela River to collect hazardous materials, Chief Mark Caravasos said.

Emergency officials worked with Summer’s Towing, which had a large crane on scene, to hoist the Jeep out of the water.

Brown crossed over two northbound lanes of traffic and entered a wooded area adjacent to the roadway and continued traveling north until the vehicle crashed into Cobun Creek. Brown was able to get out of the vehicle on her own and was alert and talking to officers at the scene. Brown was later transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

The vehicle is completely submerged in Cobun Creek and recovery personnel are in the process of removing the vehicle from the area. Officers are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. No other vehicles or people were involved in this incident. The case is still under investigation.
