West Virginia prepares for fourth top 25 game of season against No. 15 Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. — No. 23 West Viriginia is heading into their fourth top 25 game of the year, facing No. 15 Georgetown today at 1 p.m.

The Mountaineers (3-2-1) are riding a 6-1 home win over Stony Brook on Thursday — a game highlighted by freshmen Julianne Vallerand and Nicole Payne with two goals each. It was the first time in program history two freshmen registered two goals in the same game.

“I think that there were moments where the offense was able to break down Stony Brook,” Izzo-Brown said. “In the first half, they just kept going and going. Then, they just were getting their job done. They set pieces and run to play and just were looking to combine, and their [Stony Brook’s] goalkeeper had a great game. I think we wore them down a little bit and we were able to find to those pillars.”

The Mountaineers will look to maintain their momentum in the hopes to get their first season win over a top 25 program. WVU lost to No. 3 Stanford 3-1 Aug. 25, followed by back-to-back losses to No. 6 Virginia and rival No. 8 Penn State.

The Hoyas (4-2-1) have faced two top 25 opponents in Virginia and Duke , and are heading into their third straight home game against WVU after downing Princeton 4-3 in overtime.

Georgetown highlights scorer Amanda Carolan who leads the team with three goals through seven games. Paula Germino-Watnick and Kelly Livingstone each have netted two goals. The trio have a combined 13 shots on goal.

If the Mountaineers can play their style of ball and possess the ball for a majority of the time while putting pressure on the net, the team has a chance to come away with that first top 25 win. Anna Leat, the Hoyas’ main goalkeeper, has allowed nine goals and saved 13 — a 59.1 percent rating. The Hoyas’ goalkeepers combine for a 63 percent save rating.
