WVU men’s soccer team gets ready for No. 17 Charlotte

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia men’s soccer team continues its three-match homestand by hosting No. 17 Charlotte at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

“Charlotte is perennially one of the top teams in America,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “I think they are a top-10-quality team and capable of getting to the Final Four. It’s one of those games where there’s a lot on the line early in the season, but that’s why players come to West Virginia. They want to play in games like this, and we’re looking forward to the challenge. It’s a big one.”

The Mountaineers and 49ers are set to square off for the first time.

WVU has defeated at least one top-25 opponent in 11 of the last 13 seasons under LeBlanc. West Virginia last topped a ranked opponent on Oct. 20 last year — which was a 5-1 win over No. 20 SIU Edwardsville at home.

WVU (2-1) is coming off 2-1 win over Wright State in the team’s home debut over the weekend. Additionally, the victory marked the Mountaineers’ 100th all-time win at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Charlotte (3-0) is coming off a 2-1, double-overtime win over No. 12 Coastal Carolina.

The 49ers are led by eighth-year coach Kevin Langan, who has directed the squad to the NCAA tournament in six out of the last seven seasons. Last year, Charlotte advanced to the second round of the tournament before falling to Virginia Tech.

Charlotte finished 14-5-2 last season and returns four players who scored 10 or more points in 2018.

Tuesday’s match is a Dollar Day, as fans can purchase tickets and select concession items for just $1. Due to the concert at the WVU Coliseum, fans attending the soccer game will need to enter through the band lot to avoid parking fees. The entire band lot will be opened for parking at the conclusion of band practice at approximately 5:50 p.m.
