PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Parkersburg (1-0) quarterback Bryson Singer turned a Week 1 showdown with Class AAA foe Morgantown (0-1) into his own personal showcase.
The sophomore — starting his first varsity game — completed four passes for two touchdowns and 106 yards while adding 151 yards on the ground to lead the Big Reds to a 27-21 victory.
“Our coaches had us all set up and they did a great job,” Singer said. “We did a lot of repetitions against their schemes in practice, and both our offense and defense were well prepared.”
“A lot of the stuff we saw we didn’t see on film, and that’s a credit to their coaching staff. They do a great job,” MHS coach Matt Lacy said.
The game was delayed over an hour due to lightning. Morgantown struggled throughout the game to control the ball, turning the ball over four times during the contest. Two resulted in Parkersburg touchdowns on the ensuing drives, with a third occurring inside the PHS 10-yard line as MHS appeared to be close to finding the end zone.
“I think we need to emphasize execution and perfection on the offensive end,” MHS quarterback Cam Rice said. “Whether that’s paying more attention in film, going harder in the weight room or getting treatment, we just need to make sure we get right.”
“We need to work on fundamental stuff. Early those turnovers gave them two scores and that’s tough — you’re not going to win many games with four turnovers,” Lacy added.
The pair of turnovers resulting in PHS scores came in the first quarter, allowing them to jump to an early 13-0 lead.
MHS would respond with a Jackson Wolfe touchdown run, but PHS added another pair of scores before halftime to jump to a 27-7 lead.
MHS shut down the PHS offense in the second half, holding them scoreless. Gunner Latimore and Quinn Thompson found the end zone in the fourth quarter to bring MHS within six points, but the rally fell short on a late Cam Rice interception.
