Hawks pushing forward through inexperience

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — If University High coach John Kelley didn’t know any better, he would’ve sworn he was watching a different team scrimmage against Preston on Friday than he saw the previous weekend against Keyser.

Even though the team looked leagues ahead of where it was just a week before, Kelley knows his young, inexperienced squad still has quite a few adjustments to make as the regular season begins this week.

“We had too many sloppy things — bad snaps and people running wrong routes,” he said. “There are a lot of things to clean up, but they really are fundamental things.”

While Kelley expects an uphill battle with a younger team than he has seen in quite a few seasons, the improvement so far has impressed him and he believes his team will shine as the year goes on.

“We’ve got weaknesses because these kids are young, but they’re coming along,” Kelley said. “They’re getting better every day. Now we have to get ready for a big test in front of us this week.”

UHS will host John Marshall at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
