Carol Coffman spent 36 years in the classrooms of the Albert Gallatin School District, in Fayette County, Pa.
Then she retired and picked up a camera, beginning what she calls her “second life” behind the lens.
Her images range from landscapes to architecture to a once-in-a-lifetime shot taken in Wisconsin while on the mend from shoulder surgery.
“I call it ‘Driven,’ ” she said of the photograph that captures a young boy driving a team of horses across a wooden bridge. “I could barely move my arm, but I just happened to turn around and see that. I had one shot to capture it. A magical thing happened.”
The award-winning snap was one of many on display Friday. Coffman was a guest artist at Spencer & Kuehn Fine Jewelry Studio as a part of Main Street Morgantown’s July Arts Walk.
A mild summer evening helped draw arts lovers downtown, as did the opportunity to see the fruits of local artistic talent, look around some shops — and maybe sip some lemonade.
Colletta Messenger and Nelda Watson did all of the above as they made their way down High Street.
“This is the first time we’ve been to an arts walk in the summer, but we’ve probably been four or five times in the fall,” Watson said. “We come down to see the different artists and take a look around in all the stores.”
And that, Main Street Morgantown Executive Director Barbara Watkins said, is what it’s all about.
“That’s exactly the point of it, to get people down here to take a look around, see what we have in the downtown and hopefully, come back often,” she said.
