ROMNEY, W.Va. — After delivering a 12-2 blowout to Fairmont Friday night, Morgantown saw another blowout — this time on the receiving end.
With the heatwave in full effect, Post 2 faced a 10-0 loss in five innings in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Post 2 would end up splitting the day with Post 91, however, taking Game 2 into the ninth inning for a close win.
Romney was firing on all cylinders Saturday, registering three times as many hits as Morgantown while holding the Area 2 leader to just four total bases in the first dance of the day.
Zack Whitacre was credited the win on the mound for Romney, striking out five and giving up no walks.
Colton Matthews picked up the loss with only one strikeout and one walk. Game 2 Morgantown and Romney were neck-and-neck in the second installment of the doubleheader, but Post 2 would come out victorious with a close 6-5 win.
It was Morgantown who would have the advantage in hits this time around, securing 12 to Romney’s seven.
With Romney leading 1-0 going into the top of the third, Morgantown knocked off the rust for three runs — capped by Devon Neal with a two-run home run.
After a defensive 1-2-3, Post 2 padded their lead in the fourth when Quintin Smith singled in Matt Renner.
Post 91 fought back in the fifth, knotting the score at 4-all off of Foster Conis’ two-run triple.
Romney took the lead once again in the sixth, but Morgantown responded with a tying run in the top of the seventh. Neither team would score in the eighth, and Neal would find himself in scoring territory after his triple to center field. Gavin Cottle secured the go-ahead RBI, driving in Neal with the next at bat.
Ryan Shoemaker would lead off the bottom of the ninth for Romney, making it to base on a single to the outfield. Shoemaker would then capitalize on an error by Casey Smith, stealing second, but two consecutive outs would strand him there.
