Mon Health and WVU Medicine have joined forces to collaborate on 24/7 teleneurology services at Mon Health System, as well as Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.
Under the agreement, Mon Health doctors will have immediate access to WVU Medicine neurologists, who will be able to quickly assess and recommend treatment to reverse debility and further function loss. Once the initial assessment is made, then it will be decided whether to continue treatment at Mon Health or transfer the patient to another facility.
“We share one goal and vision to drive world-class stroke care for the patients we serve,” Mon Health System President and CEO David Goldberg said in a statement.
Teleneurology is defined as a neurological consultation at a distance using the internet, telephone and other connectivity technologies and devices. It is considered an evolving field of medicine and will eventually affect all neurologists, according to the National Institutes of Health.
“Our primary goal in the upcoming year is to educate as many people as possible in the community on the signs and symptoms of acute stroke,” said Gregory Nelcamp, Mon Health System’s Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs. In addition, Mon Health System is committed to partnering with local EMS to ensure that quick, timely transport is available to get patients to the nearest facility.”
Mon Health said teleneurology consultations will also be available for inpatients with other neurologic conditions as well. These can include headache, dementia, epilepsy, stroke, movement disorders and multiple sclerosis.
