MORGANTOWN – Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center registered nurse Kyle Dean has received a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
The DAISY Award is awarded to nurses quarterly at the hospital and is a part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize and thank nurses for the care and kindness they provide. Nominations are sent in by patients, families and coworkers and compiled to award selected recipients.

“I’m overwhelmed and thankful to be receiving a DAISY Award,” Dean said. “I love being a nurse–getting to take care of people and helping others.”
Dean has worked at Mon Medical Center for two years and was nominated for the DAISY Award by a patient’s family member.
The patient’s family member said in the nomination form: “Throughout my grandfather’s various ailments, Kyle Dean was there to listen, answer and resolve. My Grandpa truly felt safe with him and could talk to him like a friend. Aside from the close bond created with my loved one, I noticed that he was constantly assisting and relieving others without skipping a beat. Kyle Dean has the compassion, work ethic and strong moral compass that I wish everyone had.”
Krystal Atkinson, Mon Medical Center chief administrative officer and chief nursing officer, and chief nursing executive of Mon Health System, said, “We are honored to once again celebrate the exceptional dedication of one of our nurses with a DAISY Award. Kyle exemplifies selflessness and excellence in patient-centered care, and we are proud to recognize his outstanding contributions with this well-deserved award.”
Nurses can be nominated by anyone who has been affected by their care – patients, family members, other nurses, physicians, other clinicians and staff – anyone who has experienced or observed extraordinary, compassionate care being provided by a nurse.
DAISY award honorees, the DAISY Foundation says, receive a certificate in a DAISY portfolio, a hand-carved Healer’s Touch sculpture from Zimbabwe, an Honoree pin, a congratulations banner to hang in the unit, a copy of their nomination, a gift bag, and cinnamon rolls to share. After the presentation, the honoree is added to the DAISY website, and the nurse is then eligible for professional development, education, and wellness benefits.
The Foundation reports that it has received more than 2.5 million nominations and honored more than 220,000 nurses at more than 6,500 healthcare organizations around the world.
