Kellogg nets 32 as No. 2 Morgantown races past No. 7 Washington 86-54 to advance to state semifinals

CHARLESTON – The second-seeded Morgantown girls’ basketball team filled the stat sheet on Wednesday in an 86-54 victory over 7-seed Washington in the quarterfinals of the 2025 WVSSAC girls’ basketball tournament in Charleston.

Morgantown sophomore Kayli Kellogg scored a game-high 32 points on 12 of 20 shooting with three triples. She added four rebounds, four assists, and five steals as the Mohigans advanced to the Class AAAA semifinals and will battle No. 6 George Washington, who defeated 3-seed Parkersburg 59-50, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Senior Sadaya Jones added 16 points for the Mohigans, and sophomore Tatum Devries added 15, shooting 6 of 8 from the field.

MHS totaled 37 rebounds, 20 assists, and 22 steals while forcing 26 turnovers out of the Patriots.

“We had some turnovers in the first half that weren’t typical Morgantown High basketball, but I thought we cleaned it up well in the second half,” MHS head coach John Fowkes said. “It’s nice that I’ve been here before as a head coach and as an assistant with the boys team and with Jason White on the girls team. These girls bought into our preparation, and you have to give credit to these girls up here.”

Kellogg scored 16 points in each half to lead the Mohigans as the entire team piled on the hustle stats.

Six players had at least four rebounds for MHS; four players had four assists, and seven registered a steal, with four players nabbing at least three.

MHS scored 50 of their 86 points in the paint and 30 points off 26 Washington turnovers.

“Hustling is just what we do every day in practice, and it’s contagious,” Fowkes said. “Carper Messerly set the tone in the first half by diving for a loose ball, and it was that way for us the entire rest of the game. I appreciate how these girls play for each other and their school.”

Morgantown led 19-8 after the first quarter and outscored the Patriots 32-16 at halftime.

Nine Mohigans scored a basket in the second half, and they scored 54 points in the third and fourth quarters.

“It starts on the defensive end, we have some great athletes on defense that help lead to our offense,” Kellogg said. “That helps us stay locked in defensively, knowing it will help us get into an offensive rhythm.”

The two teams combined for 92 points in the second half, with the Patriots scoring 38 of their 54 points in the second half.

“We fought hard and just didn’t come out on the end of the game we expected to,” Washington head coach Rahsaan Edwards said.

No. 2 Morgantown and No. 6 George Washington will tip-off at 7:15 p.m. inside the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center in the Class AAAA semifinals on Friday evening.
