MORGANTOWN — The Morgantown Police Department said there were no arrests made Saturday after officers responded to a large gathering on North High Street.
According to information provided by the city, the MPD responded at approximately 2:40 p.m. after receiving reports of loud music causing noise violations.
Upon arrival, officers told the operator of the stereo to turn off the music. Once the music was turned off, the crowd became aggressive and began throwing projectiles at the officers.
The press release states officers utilized standard crowd dispersal techniques, like pepperballs and inert smoke.
A pepperball is a projectile that contains a powdered chemical that irritates the eyes and nose in a manner similar to pepper spray. Officers can be seen firing the projectiles from what appear to be paintball guns in some of the social media posts circulating online.
Once order was restored, officers evaluated bystanders and offered to contact EMS if needed. Nobody at the scene requested EMS assistance.
No arrests were made. The incident is being investigated further to determine if any additional enforcement actions should be taken.
The MPD was assisted by the University Police Department.
