James A. McCord

James A. “Sonny” McCord passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus, at the age of 83, Friday, February 28, 2025, surrounded by his family. James was born May 14, 1941, to Herbert L. and Emma Gaye McCord.
James graduated from University High School in 1959. Upon graduation, he joined the Air Force and served for 7 ½ years, including a year in Vietnam.
He retired from the Maidsville Post Office as a rural mail carrier in 2010.
He faithfully attended Kingdom EMC in Westover. He was a member of the men’s fellowship group, Ziklag, and enjoyed spending his Monday evenings with the group. He was also the only honorary male member of the Sisters in Christ Bible study, which met at his home every month. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his family; they would gather in his home for Sunday dinner. He also loved to travel with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dee and Bertie Hewitt. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and sports fan.
James is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Linda McCord; his brother, Herbert McCord; sons, J.D. McCord of Cassville, James Lee McCord (Amy) of Good Hope, Mark Hermann (Cheryl) of Missoula, Mont., Doug Hermann (Rhonda) of Drummond, Mont., and “adopted” son, Garland Mickey; his grandchildren, Jamie (Andrew), Selby, Bailey (Avery), Michaela (Jamie), Tyler (McKenley “Mac”), Megan, Rachael, Mark, Jr., and Aaron; as well as 10 great-grandchildren and his best little buddy, Lukie J. Wells.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marlena McCord Ponceroff; his brother, John McCord; and two great-grandchildren.
His family would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the staff of the Madison Center, who took exceptional care of James.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in James’ memory, to The Source Lunchbox Program, 540 Fairmont Road, Westover, WV 26501; or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Family and friends are invited to gather in the McCulla Funeral Home in Westover from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 3, and again from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, March 4, with Pastors Kevin Cain and Daniel Strosnider officiating. Following the service, James will be laid to rest at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Mt. Morris, Pa., with full military honors.
