Sam White’s 10th-inning home run hands WVU a 5-4 win over Lipscomb

MORGANTOWN — Sam White provided the offensive heroics Monday, while Reese Bassinger sealed the deal from the mound.

It all added up to a 5-4 victory in 10 innings by WVU over Lipscomb, at Ken Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn.

The Mountaineers (7-0) swept the four-game series, with three of the wins coming by two runs or less.

White’s first home run of the season came in the top of the 10th inning, sailing over the fence in right field to break a 4-4 tie.

BOX SCORE

Bassinger, a transfer from Tarleton State, picked up the win. He came on in the eighth inning and pitched three scoreless and hitless innings.

Trailing 4-2 in the seventh inning, the Bisons (2-5) tied the game after Jake Berg’s ground ball scored teammate Corey Boyette and Parks Bouck followed with an RBI single that scored Kai Holm.

That’s where the game stood until White came to the plate with one out in the 10th inning. His home run was WVU’s fourth of the series, but three were solo shots.

Bassinger finished off the 10th inning with a strikeout and two groundouts. He did walk Keaton Mahan with two outs, but that was as close as Lipscomb came to a rally.

Bassinger struck out two over his three innings to pick up his first victory of the season. With the three shutout innings, the WVU reliever lowered his ERA to 1.08 this season.

Freshman David Hagen got the start for WVU. He went two innings in his first collegiate action, giving up two hits and two runs.

White finished 2 for 4 and scored three times. Freshman Gavin Kelly drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and on a ground ball in the sixth inning.

WVU returns home to host Ohio University at 2 p.m. Wednesday for its home opener.
