Skylar King off to hot start to lead WVU to a three-game sweep of Jacksonville

MORGANTOWN — Heavy rain in Florida forced a cancellation of Sunday’s final game of West Virginia’s opening four-game series against Jacksonville.

The weather may have been the only thing that could have slowed down WVU outfielder Skylar King.

The Mountaineers won the second game of a doubleheader late Saturday, 3-2, with King providing a two-run home run in the fourth inning to win the game.

In the three games against the Dolphins, King batted .600 that also included a triple, five RBIs and a stolen base.

With the three-game sweep, WVU started a season 3-0 for just the second time in the past 13 seasons.

WVU junior Gavin Van Kempen struck out six over four innings — the second game of the doubleheader was just seven innings — while allowing just one run to earn the win.

Reese Bassinger closed out the game with 2 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out four to earn his second save of the season.

Jacksonville’s Aidan Masters hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.

WVU came back to take the lead for good in the fourth, when Sam White and Gavin Kelly walked to open the inning. Both moved up a base on a throwing error from the pitcher on a pick-off attempt.

Grant Hussey scored White with a ground ball RBI and King followed with the biggest hit of the day, a two-run home run for a 3-1 lead.

WVU shortstop Brodie Kresser was also impressive over the series, finishing with a .556 batting average, while Logan Sauve batted .364 in the series.

WVU returns to the road at 4 p.m. Friday, when the Mountaineers face Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. for a three-game series.

The Bisons (1-1) split two games against Kentucky to open their season.
