Nancy Susan Cain, 78, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Monday, February 10, 2025, in Mon Health Medical Center, Morgantown. She was born October 13, 1946, in Pittsburgh, to the late John and Helen Ruth Camp and raised alongside her late siblings, Dorothy Ellen Camp and David Van Camp. She was also later preceded in death by her parents-in-law, David and Dorothy Cain.
Nancy’s journey through life was one of passionate education and unending love. She dedicated over 40 years to the Monongalia County Board of Education, working as a beloved school teacher with cherished stints at Westover Junior High and Morgantown High School.
Nancy believed in the transformative power of learning, adhering to the philosophy that education extended far beyond the confines of a classroom. Her commitment to personal growth led her to relish her Olli classes at West Virginia University, finding joy and fulfillment in being a lifelong learner.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Nancy’s life was rich with involvement in her community. She was an active member of both the Westover United Methodist Church and Kingdom: a Community Church. As part of the United Methodist Women and countless Bible studies, she combined her faith with action, always eager to lend a hand and share her wisdom.
An embodiment of art and joy, Nancy expressed herself through poetry and found a song for every moment. Her keen sense of history not only made her an ardent American patriot but also a dedicated historian who meticulously kept photos, scrapbooks, and journaled scrapbook pages to ensure every family story was told with love and care.
Nancy’s greatest source of pride and happiness was her cherished family, with whom she forged an unbreakable bond. She was the loving wife of Gary Cain, with whom she celebrated an astonishing 59 years of marriage, filled with companionship and adoration.
Together, they created a bountiful family that includes her devoted children, Keely Woodford (Joey), Kerry Bowers (John), Kevin Cain (Lesley), and Nick Asemani (Roya); as well as her grandchildren, Chelsey Eakle (JB), Mallory Reehl (David), Tanner Cain (Amy), Garrett Cain (Bradlee), Cameron Cain (Kaleigh), Aryan Asemani, Maddox Bowers, and Mason Bowers, each of whom she adored. Nancy’s spirit will live on through her great-grandchildren, Harper Ruth Reehl, Henry David Reehl, Sawyer Grace Eakle, and Isabella Grace Cain. She was also dearly loved by her cousin, Susie Melenric; and a multitude of relatives, friends, and former students who felt the warmth of her presence in their lives.
Nancy held a special place in her heart for her home, which was always open to everyone, whether she knew them or not. For nearly 100 years, the family dinner table was a hub of tradition, conversation, love, and laughter. Her pool was not just a body of water, but a fountain of community and camaraderie. A generous soul, Nancy also took joy in feeding the neighborhood birds and squirrels, as well as supporting children in need through her dedication to packing school lunches for The Source Lunchbox
Program.
As a historian, Nancy was deeply rooted in traditions, cherishing every opportunity to celebrate the milestones of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her faith in Christ was the cornerstone of her existence, providing her with the strength and compassion that defined her remarkable life.
Nancy Susan Cain was, in every sense, a faith-filled, loving, and wise person. Her departure leaves behind a legacy of kindness, education, and family unity that will be felt for generations to come. While our hearts grieve the loss of such a magnificent soul, we take solace in the knowledge that her final moment was serene and filled with the love of her family, who were by her side to bid her a “peaceful moment at which to die.”
