Delmas Leon Newman, known affectionately by many as “Del”, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2025, with his family at his side.
Born August 30, 1944, in Grafton, his life was marked by loyal devotion to his family, his church, and his lodge.
Del was a supportive presence in the lives of his loved ones, always there to lend a hand or offer a thoughtful word when it was needed most.
A veteran of the United States Army, Delmas carried a sense of duty and honor throughout his life that was deeply respected by all who knew him.
Del made his home in Morgantown, where he worked as a parts manager in the mining supply business before his retirement.
In his leisure time, Del took pleasure in the simple joys of life, such as watching Fox News and listening to his radio.
As a faithful and longtime member of the Morgantown Lodge #10 I.O.O.F., he found a community that shared his values and enriched his life. Del was also a faithful member of the Community United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his beloved spouse of 57 years, Mary Newman; his loving daughter, Lisa Pyles and husband Jack; granddaughter, Amber Pyles; his sister, Wilma Hose and husband Mike; nephews, Bryan Hose and wife Tina, and Steven Hose and wife Wendy; and his sister- in-law, Kay Newman.
Del was preceded in death by his parents, Meredeth and Velvet Newman; and his brother, Gorman Newman.
Friends may join the family to honor Del’s life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Avenue, Westover (304-292-9494) from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, and from 10 until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 30, officiated by the Reverend Lawrence Rebelo of Community United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown, with Full Military Honors accorded.
Morgantown Lodge #10 I.O.O.F. will hold a memorial service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to conclude the visitation.
