The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office is planning an operation to recover a vehicle that has been discovered partially submerged in Cheat Lake.
The recovery operation presents unique challenges due to the frozen condition of the lake. Specialized teams, including ice rescue experts and diving units are being coordinated to ensure the safety of all involved. The operation is tentatively scheduled to begin Sunday during the late morning into the early afternoon hours, pending weather conditions and the completion of safety assessments.
Agencies assisting are as follows: Murrysville (Pa.) Medic One Dive Team, Morgantown Fire Department Dive Team, Granville Fire Department Dive Team, Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Department, MECCA 911, West Virginia DOH and West Virginia University Emergency Management. Summers Towing will assist with the removal of the vehicle.
Area residents and travelers are advised to avoid the area of Interstate 68 between exits 7 and exit 10 East, if possible, starting at 10 a.m. for approximately three hours Sunday. If traveling east on Interstate 68, a detour will be established that will route traffic off of Interstate 68 at exit 7 through state route 857 North to Bowers Lane, then travel South on Turnpike 43 until getting back onto Interstate 68 at exit 10.
