Mary Jo Hornbeck, 98, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully, in her home, Thursday, January 9, 2025, after a long and full life.
She was born December 20, 1926, to the late John and Nora Satterfield Luzadder.
She and her late husband, Lemuel V. Hornbeck, were blessed with three children: Sandra Truman (Bill), Donna Prince (Larry), and the late Ronald Hornbeck (Beverly).She was a loyal sister to Bernice Matthews (92), the late James Luzadder (Pat), and the late Gladys Cooper (Robert).
Professionally, Mary Jo worked at West Virginia University as a clerk in the Comptroller’s Office. She was known for her hardworking, independent nature.
She enjoyed farming, wildlife, gardening, cooking wonderful meals for her family and baking her beloved homemade bread. In her later years, you could often find her working through puzzles and enjoying the company of her sweet dog, Maddie.
She was the anchor for her loved ones and was their place of gathering for many years. Mary Jo was blessed with a loving posterity and was grateful to spend so many years with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, who fondly referred to her as “Mam.” She delighted in their antics.
Mary Jo is survived by her sister, Bernice; her daughters and their husbands; her grandchildren, Michael Truman, Amy Adkins (Andrew), Susan Schmidt (Ammon), Carrie Truman, Jessica Smith (Todd), Rebecca Hansen (Michael), Katie Prince (Mike Spooner), Sara Arritt (Kimball), and Ann Alise Prince; and great-grandchildren, Avram, Zachery, Sydney, Joven, Elijah, Hart, Brooks, Windsor, Reese, Emberly, Abigail, Laila, Kelly, Liam, Afton and Harrison.
As Mary Jo reunites with those loved ones who Vhave gone before her, her love, spirit and guidance will always be with those she left behind.
Friends may gather at McCulla Funeral Home Thursday, January 16, for the viewing from 11a.m. until the 12 p.m. hour of service. Mary Jo will be laid to rest next to her husband, Lemuel in the Halleck Cemetery.
