Madelyn Romeo, 93, formerly of Dogwood Avenue, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2025, in Sundale Nursing Home. Madelyn was born March 14, 1931, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Harry and Cecilia McCormick McDermott.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1949, where she played trombone in the marching band. In 1954, Madelyn graduated from Ohio University, with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority.
Upon graduation from college, she worked as a public school teacher with the Youngstown Public Schools.
She met Frank A. Romeo and they wed in 1967. She retired from teaching to become a homemaker.
Frank and Madelyn made their home in Boardman, Ohio and raised their two sons. They attended St. Charles Borromeo Church. Madelyn was a people person. Everyone who met her liked her. They moved to Morgantown in 1987 due to Frank’s career transfer. Here, they attended St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Star City.
Madelyn enjoyed reading the newspaper, watching EWTN, and keeping in touch with her many friends.
She leaves behind her husband, Frank; sons, Mark of Morgantown, and Patrick (Jennifer) of Novato, Calif.; her granddaughter, Amelia Romeo; and various nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Phillips; and brother, Jim McDermott.
Madelyn’s family would like to thank the kind staff of Harmony Square in Harmony at Morgantown and Sundale Nursing Home for their compassionate care of Madelyn.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation services have been provided by Hastings Funeral Home.
Friends and family will be received at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 3346 University Avenue, Morgantown, from 10 until the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, with Father John McDonough as celebrant. Inurnment will take place at a later time at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, Ohio.
