Power returns to Morgantown after New Year’s Eve storm

MORGANTOWN – Electric power had returned to Morgantown and the surrounding area Thursday afternoon following Tuesday afternoon’s New Years Eve storm that took down trees and power lines.

At 4 p.m Thursday only one Morgantown customer remained without power, according to Mon Power. That was the only remaining outage in Monongalia County. Marion County had three remaining outages, all in Fairmont.

Across Mon Power’s West Virginia footprint, 305 customers – out of a total 543,222 – were still without power.

Mon Power told The Dominion Post on Thursday that 24,911 customers were impacted by Tuesday’s weather, and 99% of those were restored by Wednesday evening.

In Morgantown’s First Ward, the Church of the Brethren was offering a warming center on Tuesday, posting on social media about it. Mon Power said that on Tuesday afternoon a double-circuit pole in the First Ward area was destroyed by a tree, resulting in an outage that impacted more than 3,000 customers.

“While we were able to restore service to the majority of those by connecting them to a backup power feed that day, 137 customers remained without service until Wednesday evening, when our crews completed the pole replacement.”

The Dominion Post reported on Tuesday afternoon, while the storm was still ripping across the area, that Mon Power reported 8,407 customers without power in Monongalia County – the most customer outages of any county in Mon Power’s footprint. The vast majority of outages were in Morgantown – 8,294.
