Prep roundup: Hawks flying high, Cee-Bees buzzing on hardwood

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CLASS AAAA

Morgantown traveled to McHenry, Md., for a pair of games at Garrett College over the weekend, returning with a 1-1 record and moving to 6-2 overall.

The Mohigans defeated South Park (Md.) 72-53 on Friday. Senior Sadaya Jones scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, with sophomore Kayli Kellogg added 18 points and nine assists. Lucie Hatcher contributed 16 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Sydney Deusenberry added 10 points.

The Mohigans fell to Southern (Md.) 59-51 on Saturday and hosts John Marshall on Friday evening.

Preston dropped all three of their contests in Orlando, Fl. the weekend before Christmas break. The Knights battled against Milken (Ca.), Timber Creek (Fl.), and Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.). Preston will host Trinity Christian on Saturday afternoon in Kingwood.

BOYS BASKETBALL

CLASS AAAA

The Morgantown Mohigans remained undefeated (5-0) early in their campaign with a solid 62-38 victory over Bishop Guilfoyle (Pa.) on Saturday.

MHS enjoyed an all-around scoring effort with eight different scorers as sophomore Max Frey led with 14 points. Marty Johnson added 12, and Waylon Colistra had nine.

Morgantown will enjoy the week off until Saturday afternoon for a contest against Martinsburg on the road.

The University Hawks traveled to Charleston, S.C. for the Low Country Invitational, and returned to Mon County with a 3-0 finish.

UHS defeated Academic Magnet Academy (S.C.) 90-39 on Friday. Senior Chayce Adams scored 18 points, with sophomore KK Lewis adding 14 as the Hawks enjoyed a balanced offensive attack.

They followed that performance with a 65-60 victory over Queen City Prep Academy from Charlotte on Saturday. UHS trailed by 10 points in the first half before completing the comeback. Lewis led with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Zach Demidovich added 16 points and 10 boards, with Adams adding 13 points. Luke Byrer also tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

UHS capped the weekend with another victory on Monday morning, defeating Atlanta Classical Academy 76-36, improving to 5-1 on the season.

Glenn Brown, Eli Karpinski, and Adams each scored 11 points to lead the Hawks to a 3-0 weekend in South Carolina.

The Hawks return home on Friday evening to host Parkersburg South.

The Preston Knights traveled to Summersville over the weekend and split a pair of contests against Spring Valley and St. Albans.

PHS fell to Spring Valley 78-57 before responding with a 55-50 win against St. Albans in a game they trailed by 17 points at one point.

Preston improved to 4-2 on the season and will travel to visit Keyser on Friday evening.

CLASS A

The Clay-Battelle Cee-Bees defended their 2023 Santa Series title with a 67-50 victory over South Harrison on Saturday, capturing the 2024 trophy.

Senior Preston Luzader scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the championship contest.

WRESTLING

The University Hawks traveled to the 2024 Powerade Wrestling Tournament. They finished tied for 34th place out of over 70 teams at one of the most prestigious prep wrestling tournaments held annually in the country.

Morgantown High School traveled to Keith Zebley duals in Grafton over the weekend and earned third place, going 5-1 on the day.

MHS defeated Grafton (63-12), Buckhannon-Upshur (39-33), Petersburg (60-17), Weir (45-25), and Hedgesville (50-28).

MHS will host rival University on Thursday night for the annual Mohawk Dual.
