David S. Phillips

David S. Phillips, 75, of Morgantown, passed Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24, 2024, in his home, after a very brief battle with cancer.
He was a retired lab technician with Consolidation Coal at the Indian Creek Road Lab. Also, he was a founder of the annual Gem and Mineral Show in Morgantown, and owner of Sunset Fossils and Minerals.
He would always say that he was a chemist by trade and a hobbyist that got out of control. He enjoyed the rock and mineral shows. He was very knowledgeable and loved to share with anyone about various rocks. He enjoyed rock collecting and was an avid bicyclist in Morgantown and Pawleys Island, S.C. He enjoyed leading and mapping out routes to cycle.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty J. Phillips; children, Jason (Tracy) Phillips, Joseph Phillips, and Cassandra Phillips, all of Morgantown; grandson, Remmington Phillips; brother, Stephen (Elizabeth “Betsy”) Phillips of N.C.; nephews, Craig Phillips of North Carolina and Nathaniel Phillips of Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sterling and Kay Phillips; infant sister, Karen; in-laws, Joseph and Ella Jean Hodge; and first wife, Bonnie Keys Phillips.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation arrangements have been provided.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, Monday, December 30, from 2 until the time of the memorial service at 4 p.m., with Pastor Todd Hurley officiating.
