Robert L. ‘Butch’ Darnell, a beloved family man, and lifelong resident of Morgantown, WV, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at the age of 76. He was born September 16, 1948, a son of the late Robert G. Darnell and Laura Bell Darnell.
After a storied career as a coal miner and mine foreman, Butch became a respected figure in his community, embodying the quintessential characteristics of a man who was as handy as he was friendly and kind. His life was a testament to the love of labor and the joy found in simple pleasures.
Butch’s memory is cherished by his devoted wife, Margaret Darnell; son, Jerry Darnell (Dorothy); daughters, Bobbi Jo Stamper (Buck), and Cindy Darnell (Johnny May); and sister, Sandy Miller (Tim). His legacy includes a tapestry of 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who will miss their patriarch dearly. He reunites in eternity with his parents, his first love Daisy, his son Douglas, and siblings Charles, Betty, James, Thomas, Roger ‘Pete’, as well as his trusty canine sidekick, Maggie.
Countless hours were spent by Butch working in his garage, going camping, fishing, or simply reveling in music that moved his soul. A fond memory shared by many was of him polishing his 1965 Buick, his ultimate pride and joy.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Monday, December 30, 2024, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and again on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 p.m. with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating. Butch will be laid to rest at Fletcher Cemetery.
