Enid Joan Portnoy, 89, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2024, in Rockville, Md., peacefully in her home after a battle with cancer.
Enid was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. A longtime and beloved college professor, Enid inspired generations of students in over 40 years on the faculty of West Virginia University through her creative and impassioned approach to teaching, research, writing and theatrical performances.
After retiring from teaching, she relocated to Rockville and was happiest spending time with her four grandchildren, engaging with her friends and pursuing numerous teaching, theater, book group, volunteer and community service efforts.
Enid received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Northwestern University, and her Ph.D. from West Virginia University.
Enid is survived by her son, Elliott and daughter-in-law, Estee and their children, Josh, Noah and Daniela; and her son, Darin and daughter-in-law, Glenda and their son, Benjamin.
