Class AAAA
The University Hawks fell to 1-2 early in the season over the weekend with a one-possession loss to Laurel Highlands 49-46.
UHS will head to Northridge, Ohio this weekend for a trio of games in the Beach Ball classic.
Class A
The Clay-Battelle Cee-Bees picked up a pair of wins to improve to 2-4 in Sherry Patterson’s first year as head coach. Her first career victory came on Friday against Hundred 47-30. Sophomore Ali Hellyer scored 24 points, with Bre DeBolt, also a sophomore, adding 13.
They continued the momentum on Tuesday evening against Jefferson-Morgan (Pa.), picking up a 41-34 win at home. Hellyer scored 21 points, combining with DeBolt, who had 16, for 37 points.
Trinity Christian dropped a home contest to the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears 46-38 on Saturday, falling to 1-1 on the season. The Warriors return home to host Notre Dame on Friday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Class AAAA
The three-time defending state champion Morgantown Mohigans traveled to Brooke on Tuesday evening and returned with a 79-27 victory to improve to 2-0.
All five starters scored in double figures for Dave Tallman’s club, with sophomore Max Frey scoring a game-high 18 points. The Mohigans made eight three-pointers in the contest.
MHS will return home to The Rowdie Center this weekend to host the LG Holiday Classic, welcoming Huntington, Washington, and crosstown rival University to Wilson Avenue Friday and Saturday.
Class A
Trinity Christian fell to 0-4 on the season with a pair of losses to Moorefield 59-45 and Wheeling Central Catholic 75-18.
The Warriors will host Notre Dame on Friday evening.
The Clay-Battelle Cee-Bees began their 2024-2025 campaign with a victory over Hundred on the road last week. Senior Preston Luzader led the way with 15 points, and Josiah Morgan added 13.
WRESTLING
The University High School wrestling team traveled to Barnesville, Ohio, and captured the overall title with a score of 304.0, ahead of second place by over 100 points.
Individual champions for the Hawks were: Pepper Martin (113), Rider Ludrosky (157), Emerson Murphy (175), Jackson Pate (215), and Brock Kehler (285). Kehler was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
