Wayne Ernest Helmick Sr., 84, passed away Friday, November 22, 2024, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Wayne was born November 10, 1940, in Morgantown, a son of the late Hayward and Clarice Britton Helmick.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lydia Ann Pitcher Helmick; his children, Noi Helmick of Columbus, Ohio, Wayne Helmick Jr. and wife Patty of Rapid City, S.D., Tiffany “Belle” Meredith and companion Jimmy Kirk of Westover, Diana Salentro and husband Freddie of Shinnston, and Darryl Helmick of Fairmont; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Hayward Helmick and wife Carol of Morgantown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Helmick; and a brother, Terry Helmick.
Wayne was a proud veteran of the United States Navy having served for 10 years.
He worked as a coal miner at several mines in Pennsylvania.
He loved being outdoors – particularly hunting and fishing, where his adventures took him to many traveling spots in the western part of the United States, Canada and New York, just to name a few.
Wayne was the kind of friend anyone would love to have, and never spoke badly of anyone.
Friends may join Wayne’s family to honor his life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Avenue, Westover, from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 26, and again from 12 noon until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, officiated by Pastor Monica Calvert. Interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, where Full Military Honors will be accorded.
