Catholic Charities to operate warming shelter with city, county support

MORGANTOWN — Catholic Charities West Virginia has been tapped to run a winter warming shelter in the former Hope Hill Sobering Center space on the ground floor of Hazel’s House of Hope.

Funding for the additional space will be provided in the form of $40,000 each from Morgantown City Council and the Monongalia County Commission.

Both bodies approved the funding during their respective meetings on Wednesday.

Morgantown issued a request for proposals for the operation of the shelter in June, but received no responses. Catholic Charities, which has since taken over operation of the former Bartlett House triage shelter in HHH, was the lone proposal this time around.

The shelter will have two staff members on site per shift and operate daily from 8 p.m.- 8 a.m. starting Dec. 15 and running through March 15.

According to the stipulations set by the selection committee, priority will be given to unsheltered individuals from Monongalia County.

Those using the shelter must already be registered with the Homeless Management Information System or get registered as a condition of entry.

Shelter occupancy will be determined by the fire marshal’s office though it’s been indicated the shelter will be able to take in 22 people.
