CHARLESTON – The Morgantown High School volleyball team can hold its head high despite defeat in the 2024 Class AAAA state championship to Hedgesville on Thursday, as the Mohigans have created one of stronger programs in the state in recent years.
Most of the time, multiple trips to the state championship game would mean a drop off in the talent on the roster, but for MHS, a majority of their 2024 players are slated to return in 2025.
Most notably, junior Paige Brink and freshman Leah Greeny, who both will be on the watchlist for one of the top in the state next year.
Brink was named to the Class AAAA all-tournament team after her performance in Charleston and led the Mohigans this season with 368 kills entering the state tournament.
Greeny, daughter of WVU volleyball head coach Jen Greeny, quickly made her name known around the state with her solid all-around talent. She was key in the Mohigans giving themselves a chance after falling behind against Hedgesville in the state championship.
“Leah was amazing tonight,” MHS head coach Abigail Wolfe said. “We had so much growth on this team throughout this season. We are losing some very impactful players with our senior class, but the depth on this team is something we are very excited for. We have a freshman (Greeny) and a sophomore (Abby Paulsen) who are becoming a strong duo at the net and have three or four juniors who were huge for us this season. I know the season just ended but these girls are already hungry and craving to get back out on the court and get to work.”
The Mohigans were led by a non-senior in seven of the ten statistical categories taken during the season.
“The future looks really bright for us, and in the loss, I hope the younger group of girls can use it as a positive for the future,” Wolfe said. “Morgantown High volleyball isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.”
