Democrat Tom Bloom locked up a third six-year term on the Monongalia County Commission Tuesday evening, besting Republican challenger MaryAnn Folz 21,477 to 19,128.
“I’m feeling a lot better now than at 7:30,” Bloom said after the unofficial results were posted. “I just want to thank the citizens for giving me a third term. I believe they believe in me and my technique of being hands-on, honest and accessible.”
Bloom will return to the Western District seat he’s held since defeating Joe Statler in 2012. He defeated Andrew Price in 2018 to win reelection.
He thanked his wife for her support through another election as well as the efforts of his campaign manager, Steve Blinco.
“I also want to thank the two other county commissioners because I think this is an endorsement of the county commission and what we’re doing as a team,” he said. “I’m pleased the citizens chose to make decisions because they knew what was going on in the county and not because outside groups who weren’t from Mon County tried to come in and make decisions for county residents.”
As for Folz, she said her first run for public office ended with a mix of disappointment and encouragement.
“It’s too bad there wasn’t just a little bit more, but it is what it is. I’m honestly happy with the results. I thought it was going to be a blowout, so I’m quite pleased with the results,” she said. “I was hoping people were ready for change, but they’re not. So, things will continue as they always have.”
Folz said she intends to continue making her presence felt in the community and during commission meetings as she keeps her sights on public office.
“I don’t know what [office] yet, but I’m not giving up,” she said. “I’m just humbled that so many people thought I’d be the best person to represent them and support them and get their issues addressed. I thank every one of them and I want them to know I’m still going to keep working. I’m not done just because I lost this race.”
All results are unofficial until certified through canvassing.
