Prep roundup: Soccer begins postseason play, volleyball wrapping regular season

MORGANTOWN—Fall is moving quickly, and with it comes the final stages of the regular season for prep sports.

Boys’ and girls’ soccer opened sectional tournament play around the state on Tuesday evening, while volleyball is heading toward the end of the regular season.

Class AAAA volleyball

The Morgantown Mohigans won two games in Wheeling on Tuesday night, defeating Wheeling Park (2-0) and Oak Glen (2-1). 

MHS improved to 33-9 on the 2024 season and will host Parkersburg South on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. before finishing off the regular season with a quad-match on Saturday at Musselman that includes Oak Glen and Shady Spring.

University High has also reached 30 wins for its 2024 campaign and improved to 32-8-1 on Tuesday with 2-0 victories over Elkins and Hampshire. 

The Preston Knights split matches on Tuesday evening at home. They lost 2-1 to Frankfort and then won 2-1 over Lewis County.

Senior Shayla Brandt had ten assists, and senior Brooke Snyder added nine kills, four blocks, and six serving aces against Lewis. Senior Salah Weaver had 14 digs, and junior Camdyn Metheny added six serving aces to help lift the Knights (7-16).

Class AAA girls soccer

The Morgantown girls soccer team opened sectional play in Region I Section I with a commanding 10-0 victory over John Marshall Tuesday evening. Senior Ariana Borneo and sophomore Gabbie Brown each provided a hat trick in the contest, with Borneo also adding an assist. Leina Cummings scored two goals, with Ella Miller and Nusaiba El-Sarrar adding the final two goals for MHS. Goalkeeper Camdyn Smith added an assist of her own while earning the clean sheet.

MHS will host Wheeling Park on Thursday in the Region I Section I title match. The Patriots defeated the Mohigans 2-0 in the last meeting between the two teams for the 5A OVAC championship on September 26.

The Preston Knights fell to Fairmont Senior in penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw in regulation time. PHS ends the 2024 season 5-13-3.

Class AAA boys soccer

On Tuesday night, the Morgantown Mohigans defeated the Brooke Bruins 11-1 to begin the Region I Section I tournament.

MHS will advance to play Wheeling Park on Thursday in the sectional championship match at Wheeling Island Stadium. The Patriots are responsible for the Mohigans’ only two losses this season.
