Patricia Lou Shaffer Poffenberger, affectionately known to many as Pat, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Pat was 83.
She was a daughter of Antionette “Toni” Marie and Ralph “Bud” Wayne Shaffer. Pat’s warmth and kindness touched all who knew her.
Pat’s life was rich with love and laughter, hallmarks of her 63-year marriage to her beloved husband, Billy Poffenberger. Together, they built a life centered around family and shared joy.
Pat’s role as a mother to Lisa Poffenberger, and to son Alan and his wife Traci Poffenberger, was fulfilled with the same love and devotion she gave to all aspects of her life. Her grandchildren, Paige and Carson Poffenberger, were the light of her life, and she cherished every moment spent guiding and nurturing them.
A proud graduate of University High School, Pat’s commitment to education was matched only by her dedication to the welfare of animals. Her tireless work with the Monongalia County Humane Society spanned decades, where she served as a board member focused on fundraising for the Spay and Neuter Program and the Christmas Pet Food Drive. Pat was a beacon of compassion and advocacy for the voiceless. Pat’s legacy within the humane society is one of unwavering support and boundless generosity, leaving an indelible mark on the community and its four-legged friends.
Known for her quick wit and infectious humor, Pat had the remarkable ability to turn ordinary moments into lasting memories filled with laughter. Her generous spirit was felt not just by her family, but by the entire community, who benefited from her selfless acts of kindness and her unwavering commitment to helping animals in need.
Pat’s interests extended beyond her volunteer work; she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who took every opportunity to gather her family together. Whether it was a holiday, birthday, or a simple Sunday dinner, Pat ensured that these moments were special and filled with love. Her presence was a comfort and a joy to those around her, and her guidance was sought after by friends and family alike.

She will be deeply missed by her husband, children, grandchildren, and the countless lives she touched. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her memory will live on as a testament to a life well-lived, full of compassion and joy. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1 until the time of services at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 20, in the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kevin Cain officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, in Pat’s honor, to the Spay and Neuter Program at the Monongalia County Humane Society.
