MORGANTOWN – When a broken play happens in football, it doesn’t always mean something negative is going to happen or that the offense is doomed for that particular down.
If the offense has someone able to improvise and make something happen from nothing, a broken play can be the opposite of what it sounds like and be something that yields a positive result, sometimes even for six points.
That was the case Friday night at Pony Lewis Field as the Morgantown Mohigans (4-3) hosted the Martinsburg Bulldogs (6-0) for Senior Night.
Martinsburg senior quarterback Koi Fagan accounted for nearly 400 yards of offense and six touchdowns against the Mohigans. Three of those were passes that went for 33, 45, and 68 yards and were only possible because of Fagan’s ability to elude the Mohigan pass rush as he extended each play before finding an open receiver downfield for a score.
Fagan connected with senior receiver Kyree Bunny on all four throwing scores as he completed 14 of 18 passing attempts for 323 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 73 yards and two more scores on 15 attempts on the ground.
“They made some big plays in the second half with those pass plays,” MHS head coach Sean Biser said. “That’s the name of the game. We took our shots too, but we didn’t connect as many as they did; I think that was the real huge difference in the game tonight.”
Morgantown freshman quarterback Maddox Twigg was the bright spot for the Mohigans, tossing two touchdowns on only five passing completions. His first pass to senior wideout Carter Cooper for 59 yards in the second quarter tied the game at seven after a PAT by Aidan Stire.
But the Bulldogs responded immediately with a 68-yard strike from Fagan to Bunny less than a minute later, doubling the lead.
The Mohigans muffed the ensuing kickoff, and after Martinsburg recovered, Fagan scampered home from nine yards out to give his team a 21-7 lead.
Needing to score before the game got away from them, the Mohigans drove across midfield on their next offensive possession. Facing a third and six from the 46-yard line, Twigg got the ball to senior AJ Thomas in space and let him do the rest, as he went all the way for the touchdown, cutting the lead to 21-14 after the PAT.
“We didn’t do anything that we don’t normally do in the first half,” Biser said. “We used both of our quarterbacks, ran our offense, and got some plays from some guys when we needed them. I thought we were executing fairly well, but when you give up a lead and start having to play from behind, it gets difficult, and you start doing things you don’t want to have to do.”
The Bulldogs marched down the field with a well-executed two-minute-drill to add a 31-yard field goal by Sam Collins, giving them a 24-14 lead going into the locker room.
The Mohigans were unable to score any points in the second half, as the visitors scored two touchdowns in each of the third and fourth quarters.
Despite the result, Biser spoke highly of his 2025 senior class, which he says has bought into the program heavily during their time here and will leave it in a better place when they’re gone.
“I’m certainly glad I don’t have to say goodbye to them just yet; we have a few more weeks with theses guys,” he said. “They’re just great kids who have all work hard and do what we ask of them, and you can’t wish for much more out of your players. We will miss them once we have to say goodbye.”
