MORGANTOWN — West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene has been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the organization announced Tuesday.
Greene is one of 22 players named to the Good Works Team for exemplary community service for 2024. He was also named a semifinalist for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, comprised of 11 FBS players elected to the Good Works Team.
“The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team represents the power of achieving for your community,” said Sam Acho, ESPN analyst and 2010 Good Works Team member and Allstate Wuerffel Trophy recipient. “These honorees have accomplished so much in a short amount of time. I hope this award will encourage them to continue to realize the joy in serving others.”
The Good Works Team website recognizes Greene for his leadership on and off the field.
“His personal touch shines through in small acts of kindness,” Greene’s bio on the website reads. “From being a pen pal to a second grader to surprising a young fan onto the field after a game. Garrett also supports local causes, helping veterans and raising funds for cancer patients, showing his deep commitment to the people of West Virginia.”
Other members of the Good Works Team are California quarterback Chase Griffin, Georgia defensive back Malaki Starks, Washington State kicker Dean Janikowski, Texas center Hayden Conner, Penn State lineman Nick Dawkins, Notre Dame linebacker Jack Kiser, Ole Miss defensive tackle JJ Pegues, Oklahoma running back Gavin Sawchuk, Hawaii quarterback Brayden Schager and Kentucky linebacker J.J. “It is amazing to see the extra efforts and community service these 22 young men put out on a daily basis,” said Craig Bohl, AFCA executive director. “Not to be outdone, our honorary head coach Marcus Freeman shows that you can still give back and help your community even when you are the head coach of an FBS program like Notre Dame. I congratulate Coach Freeman and these 22 student-athletes for making the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.”
The Wuerffel Trophy will be selected by a national voting committee, including a fan component. The 2024 recipient, who will also be recognized as the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain will be announced on Dec. 12 on ESPN.
“Seeing the incredible effort the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has committed through hundreds of service hours to benefit their communities, starting nonprofit foundations, and hosting fundraising events, is truly inspiring,” said trophy namesake Danny Wuerffel. “We are excited to see which of these incredible servant leaders will be named the 20th anniversary recipient of the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy this year.”
Greene is in his second season as West Virginia’s starting quarterback. He led the Mountaineers to a 9-4 record in 2023, accounting for over 3,100 total yards and 29 touchdowns.
Greene and the Mountaineers are 1-2 this season heading into their Big 12 opener against Kansas on Saturday (noon, ESPN2).
