Morgantown Art Party’s gala fundraises for storefront sign, acts as an artistic “funhouse” for the community

We all have that one dress, jacket or accessory buried deep in our closets — it’s too fancy, too flashy or just too much for everyday wear, but we can’t bear to part with it. Well, it’s time to dust it off because Morgantown Art Party’s first-ever gala is the perfect opportunity to show it off.

On Saturday, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Morgantown Art Party invites the community to join the downtown nonprofit for an evening of art, self-expression and socialization.

For over six years, Morgantown Art Party has operated without a formal sign on Walnut Street. Instead, its colorful storefront and iconic rainbow-painted bench have done the work of attracting visitors.

In brainstorming ways to fundraise for a proper sign, Morgantown Art Party president, Halie Henry, came up with the idea for a gala — a laid-back opportunity to dress up and have fun. Co-founder and CEO Jillian Kelly described it as “punk-rock fancy,” a theme that aligns well with the Art Party’s playful and eccentric spirit.

The organization has always been led by themes of self-expression and community engagement.

“I think anyone that walks in the door, right off the bat they can get our vibe. We’re a safe space,” said Kelly. “It’s colorful, it’s different. Some people will come in just to be in the space, almost like going to a funhouse.”

At Saturday’s gala, the Art Party will roll out a red carpet for guests to flaunt their stylish looks, with a professional photographer on hand to capture the moment. A charcuterie board, additional refreshments and options for guests with dietary restrictions will be available.

A live jazz combo will set the mood, providing a backdrop to the lively and creative atmosphere. As with all of Morgantown Art Party’s events, the gala will encourage attendees to mingle and connect with like-minded individuals.

“It’s a really great place to meet people,” said Kelly. “We just hope people have a good time, and people that maybe haven’t been to the Art Party or haven’t been there in a while can see how much we’ve grown.”

The night will also feature a silent auction, showcasing a lineup of artwork curated from renowned local artists. Attendees will be able to bid on pieces across various mediums, including wood carving, pottery and paintings.

All proceeds from auction and ticket sales will support the creation of a new sign for the organization’s storefront.

The sign will mark more than just the Art Party’s location, however. Kelly envisions a collaborative artwork, with each letter of “Art Party” designed by eight local artists.

“I created [Morgantown Art Party] so that anyone who wants to be involved can come be a part of it,” said Kelly. “I’m excited about the idea of not just having a sign, but a sign that eight people put their energy and love and artwork into. I just feel like it’s kind of like a little blessing above our space.”

Morgantown Art Party recently received the Organizational Arts Grant from the Arts Council of Greater Morgantown and Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia Inc. This grant has allowed the nonprofit to expand its presence in downtown Morgantown through events like the gala, more artist showcases and regular hours.

Kelly hopes the gala will offer the community a deeper understanding of the Art Party’s mission and the unique community it fosters as the organization works to broaden its impact in the area.

“The people that we attract are different, they’re colorful, they’re artistic, they’re goofy, they don’t take themselves too seriously,” said Kelly. “We’re very passionate about encouraging people to believe in themselves and to believe in their art and to follow their dreams.”

Tickets for the gala are $25 per person, and the event is open to individuals 18 and older. Tickets can be purchased at the door or via Venmo and PayPal. Morgantown Art Party is at 218 Walnut St.

“It’s important for us to bring as much joy to our community and people as we can, and just have fun,” said Kelly.
