Charleston man who provided false identity charged under real name

A man originally charged Aug. 31 under a false identity was recharged under the correct name with malicious battery for allegedly beating a woman on High Street in Morgantown.

Early Aug. 31, Morgantown Police were called to a traffic stop conducted by deputies with the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department regarding a possible domestic incident that occurred on High Street.

According to court documents, deputies stated they conducted the stop and saw a female passenger “covered in blood, bruises, swelling, and other injuries that were consistent with being in an altercation.”

MPD Officer J. LaNeve spoke with two witnesses to the High Street beating who reported a male individual, later identified as Santonio Delano Dann, 34, of Redford, Mich., punched and kicked the woman several times in the face.

LaNeve noted on the criminal complaint that he did not believe the name that Dann provided was his real name and investigation into that continued.

On Wednesday, the false Dann was arraigned under his real name Deangelo Montez Cann, 35, of Charleston.

Cann’s real identity was found via facial recognition software from the Fusion Center and confirmed by fingerprint identification.

LaNeve was also able to view surveillance footage that showed Cann punching the victim in the head then grabbing her by the hair and throwing her to the ground.  With the woman on the ground, he then kicked and punched her in the head, the criminal complaint states.

Cann was charged with malicious battery and bail was set at $75,000. He is currently being held at North Central Regional Jail.
